Buy and Know About Amazon Gift Card

Gift cards are prepaid debit cards that allow the cardholder to spend a specific amount of money at designated retailers or services. There are two primary types of gift cards in the USA:

1. Store-Specific Gift Cards:

  • Usage: These cards are only valid at specific retailers or online stores. For example, a Walmart or Amazon gift card can only be used at those stores.
  • Features:
    • Can usually be purchased in physical form or as e-gift cards (digital).
    • Often come with no additional fees.
    • May include expiration dates or limitations on where they can be used, but many states have regulations protecting cardholders from unfair expiration terms.

2. General-Purpose Gift Cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.):

  • Usage: These cards can be used wherever the card network (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) is accepted, just like a debit or credit card.
  • Features:
    • Typically come with an activation fee, which varies depending on the amount loaded on the card (often between $3.95 and $6.95).
    • Can be used both in-store and online.
    • Some may have monthly inactivity fees if not used within a certain period.
    • Often available in preset denominations like $25, $50, $100, or custom amounts.

Important Factors:

  • Fees: Some general-purpose cards may have activation or maintenance fees. Be sure to check for these costs.
  • Expiration: While the funds on most gift cards in the U.S. don’t expire for at least five years, the plastic card itself may have an expiration date, after which you may need to request a replacement.
  • Balance Checking: Most cards allow you to check the balance online or via phone. Make sure to keep track of your balance since some cards will not process transactions that exceed the available funds.

Buying Gift Cards:

  • Where to Buy: Gift cards can be purchased at most retail stores, online, or directly from the issuing retailer's website. Some third-party websites, like GiftCards.com or CardCash, allow you to purchase and even trade gift cards.

Using Gift Cards Internationally:

  • International Use: Store-specific gift cards generally cannot be used outside the U.S. unless the retailer has international branches or websites that accept them. General-purpose cards (like Visa or Mastercard) can usually be used abroad, but may incur foreign transaction fees.
